Problem 21.12 Easy Free

Splitting Balls Between Two Urns

You are a prisoner offered one chance at freedom. There are 5050 white balls, 5050 black balls, and two empty urns. You may distribute all 100100 balls between the two urns however you like. Afterwards you will be blindfolded, a urn will be chosen uniformly at random, and a ball will be drawn uniformly at random from it. Drawing white sets you free; drawing black means execution. Find the probability of survival under the best possible distribution of balls.

Work it out, then compare with the answer.

SolutionShow the worked solution

Key idea. One urn can be made a sure win with a single white ball. The other urn then holds everything else, and its white fraction stays just below 12\tfrac12.

Suppose urn 1 holds ww white and bb black balls and urn 2 holds the remaining 50−w50-w white and 50−b50-b black balls. Assume both urns are non-empty. If one urn is empty, the draw comes from the other, which holds all 100100 balls, and the survival probability is 12\tfrac12. Let p1p_1 and p2p_2 be the white fractions of the two urns. Then the survival probability is

P(survive)=12(p1+p2).\mathbb{P}(\text{survive})=\tfrac12(p_1+p_2).

Achievability. Put one white ball in urn 1 and the other 9999 balls (4949 white, 5050 black) in urn 2. This gives

12(1+4999)=7499.\tfrac12\Bigl(1+\tfrac{49}{99}\Bigr)=\tfrac{74}{99}.

Optimality. Label the urns so that p1≥p2p_1\ge p_2. The overall white fraction 12\tfrac12 is a weighted average of p1p_1 and p2p_2, so p2≤12≤p1p_2\le\tfrac12\le p_1. There are two cases.

  • If p2=12p_2=\tfrac12, then p1=12p_1=\tfrac12 as well, and the survival probability is 12\tfrac12.
  • If p2<12p_2<\tfrac12, let urn 2 contain x=50−wx=50-w white and y=50−by=50-b black balls, so that x<yx<y.

    • Since xx and yy are integers, y≥x+1y\ge x+1.
    • Also w>b≥0w>b\ge 0, so w≥1w\ge1 and hence x≤49x\le 49.
    • Therefore

      p2=xx+y≤x2x+1≤4999,p_2=\frac{x}{x+y}\le\frac{x}{2x+1}\le\frac{49}{99},

      because x↦x/(2x+1)x\mapsto x/(2x+1) is increasing.

    • Combining this with p1≤1p_1\le1 gives 12(p1+p2)≤12(1+4999)=7499\tfrac12(p_1+p_2)\le\tfrac12\bigl(1+\tfrac{49}{99}\bigr)=\tfrac{74}{99}.

In every case the survival probability is at most 7499\tfrac{74}{99}, and the arrangement above attains it. Hence

P(survive)=7499≈0.747\boxed{\mathbb{P}(\text{survive})=\frac{74}{99}\approx 0.747}
