Problem 32.42 Easy Free

The Potato Paradox

A 100100-pound watermelon is 99%99\% water by weight. After sitting in the sun, it dries out until it is only 98%98\% water, with no loss of the non-water (dry matter) content. Find the new weight of the watermelon.

Work it out, then compare with the answer.

SolutionShow the worked solution

Key idea. Only the water evaporates, so the mass of dry matter does not change. Track that invariant rather than the water.

Initially the dry matter is 1%1\% of 100100 pounds, so there is 11 pound of it. After drying the watermelon is 98%98\% water, so this same pound is 2%2\% of the new weight WW. Hence

0.02 W=1⟹W=50.0.02\,W = 1 \quad\Longrightarrow\quad W = 50.

The watermelon has lost 4949 of its 9999 pounds of water and kept 4949 pounds. Check: 49/50=98%49/50 = 98\%.

Generalisation. Suppose the water fraction falls from pp to qq (with q<pq<p) and the dry matter is unchanged. Then the dry matter is (1−p)W0=(1−q)W1(1-p)W_0 = (1-q)W_1, so W1=W0 1−p1−qW_1 = W_0\,\frac{1-p}{1-q}. The ratio depends on the dry fractions, not on the water fractions. Here the dry fraction doubles from 1%1\% to 2%2\%, so the weight halves.
