Problem 10.9 Easy Free

Red Faces of Painted Cubes

A cube of side length 10 is painted red on its entire outer surface, then cut into 1000 unit cubes. One of these unit cubes is chosen uniformly at random. Find the expected number of its faces that are painted red.

Work it out, then compare with the answer.

SolutionShow the worked solution

For each of the six directions (up, down, north, south, east, west), let IdI_d indicate that the face of the chosen unit cube pointing in direction dd is red. The number of red faces is T=∑dIdT=\sum_d I_d.

The upward face of a unit cube is red exactly when that cube lies in the top layer of the big cube. The top layer contains 102=10010^2=100 of the 10001000 unit cubes, so

E[Iup]=P(top layer)=1001000=110.\mathbb{E}[I_{\text{up}}]=\mathbb{P}(\text{top layer})=\frac{100}{1000}=\frac{1}{10}.

By symmetry the same holds for each of the six directions. By linearity of expectation,

E[T]=6⋅110=35.\mathbb{E}[T]=6\cdot\frac{1}{10}=\frac{3}{5}.

Equivalently, summing red faces over all unit cubes counts each painted unit square once. That total is the painted area 6⋅102=6006\cdot 10^2=600. Dividing by the 10001000 cubes gives the mean.

E[T]=35\boxed{\mathbb{E}[T]=\tfrac{3}{5}}

Alternative. Count the cubes by type.

  • The 88 corner cubes have 33 red faces each.
  • The edge cubes number 12⋅8=9612\cdot 8=96 and have 22 red faces each.
  • The face-centre cubes number 6⋅82=3846\cdot 8^2=384 and have 11 red face each.

The total is 24+192+384=60024+192+384=600, which again gives 600/1000=3/5600/1000=3/5.

Generalisation. For an n×n×nn\times n\times n cube, the expected number of red faces is 6n2/n3=6/n6n^2/n^3=6/n.
